Three German freighters leave Tampico, Mexico and attempt to run the
British blockade. Two return to Tampico after failing to break through,
while the third, the Phrygia, is scuttled as warships overtake her.
Some sources believe, however, that the ships sighted by the German
merchantmen were actually US Navy units on Neutrality Patrol.

King George of Britain visits the city of Coventry.

Spain rescinds her ban on US reporters.

"A real unpleasant night, and from midnight to close on 5 a.m. there
was almost incessant bombing of the vicinity of the Rag. I got up to
look out of the window; it was a wierd sight looking east to see the
end of the street one blaze of flame." - From the diary of General Alan
Brooke
