An aircraft carrying RAF Air Marshal Boyd is forced down in Sicily,
and the marshal is captured by Italian troops there.

Represented by Prime Minister Count Teleki and Foreign Minister Csaky,
Hungary joins the Tripartite Pact. German newspapers claim that
the move is a step toward the recreation of a European league of
nations.

A follow-up air raid on Birmingham, conducted by 116 German aircraft,
finds little success.

US Chief of Staff Marshall announces that 26 new "Flying Fortress"
bombers have been made available to Great Britain. The four-engine
aircraft are fitted with the Sperry bombsight, rather than the top-
secret Norden sight.
