Thanks to the many individuals who responded to my query concerning
Simple Minds. The replies were many and varied; they ranged from "The early
stuff is great, much better than New Gold Dream and Sparkle..." to "The early
stuff sucks the big one, don't bother buying any of it because NGD was the
best album they produced." The majority of opinions, however, stated that
the earlier material was a little less commercial than their later stuff,
and perhaps a tad more creative. I mentioned that the instrumental material
was especially important to me; several people mentioned the LP "Sister
Feelings Call", so I bought it a couple of hours ago and found it pretty
good. The only complaint I have is that the mix is not that great. As an
interesting aside, Virgin Records included a little poster which delineated
all of Virgin's varied corporations and subdivisions, which include (believe
it or not) Virgin Films, Virgin Airways, Virgin Stores, Virgin Books, Virgin
Computer Software (games for the most popular English PCs), and of course
Virgin Entertainment, which apparently runs several discos, health clubs,
game centres, and apparently a boat that sails down the Thames now and then.
I had no idea that Virgin was so large!
