Admiral Darlan is named head of the Vichy French Government, and appoints
a new cabinet to assist.

The submarine HMS Upright torpedoes and sinks the Italian cruiser 
Armando Diaz.

Adolf Hitler, speaking on the occasion of the Nazi party anniversary,
claims 215,000 tons of British shipping sunk in the last two days,
and promises, "Germany will march."

Japanese Foreign Minister Matsuoka states Japan's ambition to control
"Oceania."  The region, though not specifically identified, would emcompass
some 1200 by 1000 miles and be capable of supporting up to 800 million
people.
