The submarine HMS Upright torpedoes and sinks the Italian cruiser Armando Diaz. Adolf Hitler, speaking on the occasion of the Nazi party anniversary, claims 215,000 tons of British shipping sunk in the last two days, and promises, "Germany will march." Japanese Foreign Minister Matsuoka states Japan's ambition to control "Oceania."
