From: military@att.att.com (Bill Thacker) Sunday, 9 March, 1941 Under Mussolini's personal direction, Italian troops launch a major attack in Albania. A stubborn Greek defense causes heavy casualties, especially to the Guilia Division, but Greek losses are also high. Ground is gained in a few places, most notably near Mali Arza and Mount Trebescini. British officials report that the attack into Ethiopia from Italian Somaliland is advancing at a rate of 50 miles a day and announce the capture of Gabredarre. London also announces that no exception to the mainland blockade would be allowed, even for the food shipments to occupied Europe proposed by former President Hoover. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Bill Thacker military@att.att.com Send submissions for "50 Years Ago" to military-request@att.att.com "It presupposes, first, that there is and will be hunger on a serious scale, and second, that hunger is a greater evil and one more urgent to be remedied than the prolongation of the war, the continued subjugation of nations to German oppression and tyranny, and the wounding and killing by the most barbarous means of countless thousands of people." - British government statement on the Hoover plan
