South African troops occupy Diredawa, in Abyssinia. Italian forces
abandoned the city yesterday and are retreating toward Addis Ababa,
and Italian residents appeal to the British for protection from
native troops who have committed a number of atrocities since the
Italian retreat.

With several labor union strikes against defense plants ongoing,
President Roosevelt denounces Communist efforts to subvert organized
labor and calls extra effort to meet defense needs.

of nations conquered during the past year should show us and the rest
of the world what it means to live in a world organized and ruled by
the Gestapo." - Franklin Roosevelt
