From: military@att.att.com (Bill Thacker) Friday, 23 May, 1941 The destroyers Kashmir and Kelly are sunk while leaving the Crete area. German fighters sink five British motor torpedo boats in Suda Bay. Hitler orders that no major military activity in the Middle East will be considered until Russia is conquered. The Bismarck and Prinz Eugen are sighted in the Denmark Strait by the Royal Navy cruisers Norfolk and Suffolk. Although the Bismarck fires several salvoes at the Norfolk, the cruiser escapes undamaged and continues to shadow the German ships, making good use of radar. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Bill Thacker military@att.att.com Send submissions for "50 Years Ago" to military-request@att.att.com "A nation that shrinks from a challenge to its moral and spiritual principles is a nation doomed to disintegration." - M.W.
