Thursday, 5 June, 1941

During a Japanese air raid on Chungking, an air raid shelter is blocked
shut, suffocating 700 civilians.

The submarine HMS Taku sinks 3 Italian cargo ships in a surface gun battle.

US Secretary of State Cordell Hull warns Vichy that the US may take action
if France collaborates further with Germany.  Washington also announces
that it has refused to consider a pact with Japan similar to the recent
Russo-Japanese non-aggression treaty.

The 1941 US Army Bill, calling for $10.4 billion in appropriations,
is introduced to Congress.

London sends Commonwealth troops to reinforce Cyprus.
