From: military@att.att.com (Bill Thacker) Monday, 9 June, 1941 Allied troops in Lebanon occupy Tyre and cross the River Litani. The Vichy destroyers Guepard and Valmy shell Australian troops on the Lebanese coast, but are driven off by four British destroyers, of which two are damaged. The Vichy government, while indicating that its forces will defend Syria and Lebanon, still avoids the use of the term "war." Germany is also silent, causing speculation as to the extent of its collaboration with France. A strike occurs at the Aluminum Company of America's Cleveland, Ohio plant. This is the latest in a rash of strikes in the US, and the Selective Service Administration orders that the draft deferment granted to skilled defense workers will be revoked if they go on strike. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Bill Thacker military@att.att.com Send submissions for "50 Years Ago" to military-request@att.att.com "Which couldn't the government sponsor schools throughout the country to teach boys 16 years old and over to glide ? ... In an emergency the government then could train these glider pilots to fly power craft in a comparatively short time." - Richard Tarbox, in a letter to the NY Times
