From: military@att.att.com (Bill Thacker) Friday, 13 June, 1941 Allied troops in Lebanon and Syria continue to make slow progress. Vichy forces continue to offer weak resistance. The United States government condemns Germany for the U-boat sinking of the American freighter Robin Moor, which resulted in the loss of 35 lives, including 33 US citizens. Germany claims the ship was carrying contraband to England, and warns that it will continue to attack such ships. It is rumored that this could result in a diplomatic break with Germany, much as did the sinking of the Lusitania in WWI. The Soviet news agency Tass acknowledges that German troops are moving toward the Russian border, but declares that rumors of tension between the USSR and Germany are false. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Bill Thacker military@att.att.com Send submissions for "50 Years Ago" to military-request@att.att.com "There could be no misunderstanding between the two countries." - Tass
