From: military@att.att.com (Bill Thacker) Monday, 30 June, 1941 Germany retains air superiority near Minsk despite a strong Soviet air effort against Guderian's panzerkorps. Jagdgeschwader (fighter wing) 51 downs 100 Soviet bombers; Werner Moelders, the unit's commander, downs 5 himself. German troops capture Lwow, Poland, and take 7000 prisoners at Brest-Litovsk. In Russia, Bobruisk is taken and the Berezina crossed. Other units threaten Kiev. Vichy France ceases diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union. Stalin orders West Front commander General Pavlov, together with much of his senior staff, to report to Moscow. They are to be court- martialed and executed for their disastrous failure. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Bill Thacker military@att.att.com Send submissions for "50 Years Ago" to military-request@att.att.com "In many ways, American tanks are superior to the armored units of any other nation. They ahve about twice the horsepower per weight of other tanks, making them much faster, and they are covered with American armor, which is tougher, thickness for thickness, than any in the world." - Newsweek magazine
