[alt.fractals] Has automatic IFS code discovery been replicated?

pollack@dendrite.cis.ohio-state.edu (Jordan B Pollack) (04/10/91)

Barnsley's (1985, 1988) IFS work seems to be great stuff. He provides
an iterative description of fractals which formally were described
using recursive rewrite rules (e.g. mandelbrot's line segment
grammars). And it is pretty clear how to "construct" IFS codes WITH A
HUMAN IN THE LOOP, through manually shrinking and collaging the source
image onto itself.

But the idea of a program AUTOMATICALLY inverting a fractal to find
IFS codes seems a trifle harder, and from my readings, the details of
these algorithms have only been hinted at, not published, (ostensibly
for crass commercial purposes.)

Have I missed a key publication that reveals the secret? Does anyone
has any references to researchers who have actually REPLICATED the
algorithm or designed equivalent ones which can take raster images and
find tiny IFS codes?
