[soc.religion.eastern] _Tao Te Ching_ on tape? Yes! And others ....

gam%netcom.COM@ames.arc.nasa.gov (Gordon Moffett) (02/18/91)

In the referenced article, I find myself guilty of using Usenet as the
"Yellow Pages" and write:

# A friend of mine with some reading problems is fascinated by my readings
# of the Tao Te Ching, but would have trouble reading them himself. I was
# wondering if this book exists on audio tape, especially the Gia-Fu Feng
# translation, but I'll take what I can get.

... so I actually when to look in the "Yellow Pages" to find an East/West
bookstore that carried this very tape. It is actually two tapes, one of
the Gia-Fu Feng translation, and the second an interpretive and guiding
attempt at presenting the meanings behind them. This is done by
Jacob Needleman, who is given credit for other philosophical works.
Despite the musical fanfare at the beginning, the narration is calm and
reflective, and otherwise without music. It is unabridged.

There is also another such tape read by Stephen Mitchell, of his own
translation.

The Feng/Needleman tapes are from Audio Literature, Inc, ISBN 0-944993-24-9.
This can probably be found at any well-stocked bookstores as well as those
specifically Eastern Philosophy oriented.

A flier with the tapes describes other tapes available from Audio Literature,
in particular some famous titles:

_The Teachings of Don Juan_, By Carlos Castaneda, (3 hours),
		ISBN 0-944993-22-2

_Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind_, by Shunryu Suzuki-roshi, (3 hours),
		ISBN 0-944993-07-9

... both read by Peter Coyote. These two are not specifically mentioned as
"Unabridged", as some of the others are. Also:

_The Bhagavad-Gita_, translated by Barbara Stoler Miller (Bantam, 1986),
read by Jacob Needleman, (2 1/2 hours), ISBN 0-944993-01-X.
	(Unabridged)

All of these 2-tape sets are $15.95 retail.

Obviously I took an interest in the _Tao Te Ching_ tapes for myself as well as
my friend, and it was nice to hear the text "in a new way" while driving in my
car, the next best thing to having the words before me. And Needleman's
commentary on the second tape was a helpful illumination of these words.
Altogether a worthwhile purchase, I thought.
