[soc.religion.eastern] Vedanta and Yoga

radams@cerritos.edu (05/11/91)

The difference between vedanta and yoga philosophies? Nobody asked but
I will speak on it anyway ;-)

The difference between vedanta and yoga is that in yoga, we are all in
a dream (delusion or maya) and when the dreamer has a dream headache, he
or she needs a dream aspirin. The headache represents the sense of not
being free from suffering and the aspirin represents certain practices and
techniques offered to alleviate the symptoms of suffering so that one sees
the Reality beyond suffering and see that Reality as one's Self. In
Vedanta, the dreamer is just told to wake up from the dream and realize
he or she never really had a headache in the first place, but was only
dreaming and the SELF is the only reality. Yoga removes the obstacles
to seeing what you already are but can't see because of the obstacles,
and Vedanta says the obstacles are not real and just Be your SELF. Since
both system lead to the same Reality, it doesn't matter which one you
adhere to. One is a more direct path philosophically but the other is
more practical.
