A second transducin alpha subunit mRNA has been sequenced by Tanabe et al. (Nature 315, 242-245 (1985)). The protein encoded by Lochrie's sequence is expressed in cone photoreceptors and is now called T-c-alpha, while the protein encoded by Tanabe's sequence is expressed in rod photoreceptors and is called T-r-alpha.
