COMMENT [1] suggests that, on the basis of transducin and other G protein
sequence homology, the ras oncogene may function as a coupling
protein to transduce signals from receptors.
A second transducin alpha subunit mRNA has been sequenced by Tanabe
et al. (Nature 315, 242-245 (1985)). The protein encoded by
Lochrie's sequence is expressed in cone photoreceptors and is now
called T-c-alpha, while the protein encoded by Tanabe's sequence is
expressed in rod photoreceptors and is called T-r-alpha. (see
entry with accession number M11115).
