At first reading I thought WWV stood for World War V. Soooooo glad it hasn't come to that. Relentless! Heathkit sells a clock kit which monitors the WWV broadcast and sets it's time to within 10 milliseconds of Coordinated Universal Time (or any other time zone you may happen to program into it). During the times which the clock cannot receive WWV do to interference there is an internal clock which keeps time. The clock has an indicator which tells if the clock is synchronized to WWV. There is also an RS-232C serial port option which runs at up to 9600 baud, with which a computer can get the time from this miraculous little clock. I think that those people whose machines have problems with "What time/day it is", should get one of these clocks. In kit form this clock costs about $250.00, with the serial port option about $300.00. If you buy the clock assembled it costs around $389.00. Richard Morris utah-cs!morris

I normally would expect no more than a one second delay, as an absolute maximum, for calls to WWV from the continental U.S. Actually, the delay will be far less if you've been routed exclusively over cable/ terrestrial microwave facilities, and normally would only start becoming "considerable" if satellite routing is involved. If you want consistent results for time setting, go out and buy one of those cheapo (under $100) WWVB (longwave) receivers which can be fed directly into computers. At longwave frequencies, propagation characteristics are essentially fixed to any given location and are very reliable. By the way, (800) 957-9999 for WWV works fine from here in 213 land. --Lauren--

Northwest area. I have tried it numerous times, and merely get a recording telling me that my call cannot be completed as dialed. Dialing a 1 before the 800 is not the problem. Any comments or suggestions? Don Mamula John Fluke Mfg. Co. Everett, WA !fluke!mamula
