[net.bugs.4bsd] Dual Termcap Entry

hurf@batcomputer.TN.CORNELL.EDU (Hurf Sheldon) (08/07/86)

There appears to be a dual termcap entry for 'v2' in most versions
	of /etc/termcap I have seen on bsd4.3 & Ultrix1.2. One is for
a version of xwindows (small screen vs100s) & one for a televideo 912
As the xterm entry generally comes first this may cause consternation
	among televideo users.

Don't use the 2-letter entries; they're intended only for the old
2BSD versions of termcap and have been completely removed for terminfo.
For a TVI 912C, use TERM=tvi912c.

There are lots of conflicts in the two-character names in termcap.
From the 4.2 manual: "The first name is always 2 characters long and
is used in older version 6 systems which store the terminal type in a
16 bit word in a systemwide data base." While it doesn't really say so,
it implies that the two-character names aren't really intended to be
used any more, and this was the intent of the implementors.

Xterm users should use the name "xterms", Televideo users should use
"912b" or "912c" as appropriate. If you're really on a V6 system, then
trim termcap down to reference those terminals that you really have
and be sure that the two-character names are unique.

Along the same line, there are sometimes two-character names that
*aren't* first - the name "dw" appears in the Decwriter entry. This
causes confusion with the "other" dw, which is a vt52.
