To localize the active domains of the Y satellite RNA, recombinant
RNA molecules were prepared in [J. Gen. Virol. 70, 2765-2774
(1989)]. The determinant for symptom
production on tabacco lies in the region between nucleotides 1 and
219. The domain for necrotic symptoms on tomato resides on the 3'
half of the molecule beyond nucleotide 219. The cDNA clone was
short of the full length by 6 nucleotides at the 5' end. The
missing Y satellite RNA sequence was known in [FEBS Lett. 174,
38-42 (1984)].
