[net.cse] Advising students

spaf@gatech.UUCP (07/13/83)

A few weeks ago I requested information about graduate schools
for advising students. The response was less than overwhelming.
My thanks to the people at RIT, CSU, and the Wang Institute
for their mailings. Isn't there any other grad schools out there
that would appreciate some Georgia Tech students?

I am submitting my request a second time.
If you are an educator, please consider that we should be interested
in helping to shape the future of our students rather than just
their technical knowledge. Please take just a moment to pass my
address along to your department secretary and have information
on your program sent to me. And if you would like more
information about Georgia Tech, please let me know.

(If this request does not directly apply to you, would you
please forward it to the appropriate persons?)

Georgia Tech's School of Information and Computer Science
has a current undergraduate enrollment of over 700. Like many
other institutions, advising students is a difficult and time-consuming
task. In particular, it is difficult to advise students about
the potential for graduate study. The task is made more difficult
when you consider how attractive are offers from industry, especially
to computer science students. I'm attempting to organize
a special advising session for our undergraduates to help
increase their awareness of the benefits and availability
of graduate study. I'd like the session to include:
-- information on financial aid including assistantships
-- GRE's and other required tests
-- how and when to apply
-- degree requirements at various schools
	-- co-op programs
-- how to get more information

I'm planning this session for the beginning of our fall
quarter (mid-September). I would appreciate it if you would
contact me if you have any information which might be useful
in this effort. I would especially be interested in hearing
if anyone out there has conducted anything similar.

Additionally, I'd like to get some materials for student reference.
Our ACM chapter maintains a library, part of which will be devoted to
graduate school references. If you have any information
on your graduate programs, including course catalogs, info
on equipment and faculty, and where to write for more information,
would you please send it to me? I would especially
appreciate up-to-date course catalogs and degree requirements.
My US Mail address is:
    	ACM Advisement
    	c/o Gene Spafford
School of Information and Computer Science
    	Georgia Institute of Technology
    	Atlanta, GA 30332

If you would like equivalent information about Georgia Tech's
graduate program, please send me your US mail address and
I will send you our department brochure and some postage-paid
cards which can be used to obtain applications.

Thanks for your assistance.
