I am conducting a survey to find out what kinds of resources are used for teaching undergraduate students at your university. I would be interested in both your current system and your projections over the next couple of years. Please note I am not asking for research facilities, only the hardware that is used by classes. I will post a summary to the net preserving anonymity. I would appreciate a brief summary such as: We are running two Unix systems. Our first year system is an 11/70 running 2.8BSD and is basically used as a remote job entry system to an IBM 4341 which processes the PL/C jobs. We expect to replace this with a 'room full of micros' connected together by some sort of local area network. Details are not available at this time as we have not yet selected the vendor or the type of equipment we choose to run. Our upper year system is a VAX 11/780 running 4.1BSD Unix. It runs Pascal, Lisp, CLU, Ingres and EMACS. In addition, a VAX 11/780 running VMS is used for the introductory FORTRAN class and a DECSystem-20 is used for the simulation class. I am mostly interested in what architectures are being used and by what universities, i.e. 20% of the responses indicated they used a large IBM mainframe with 300 terminal attached while 30% are using SUN workstations.
