<How can you teach while wearing a chadar?> A recent ad in CACM for cs professors at King Saud Univ. in Riyadh uses 'his/her' and 'he/she' to refer to applicants. I suspect that this is was only put in in order to conform to CACM ad stnds. Does anyone know if they are serious about women applicants? Are women allowed to teach there? I have been told that American women, in particular, are unwelcome in Saudi Arabia because in the recent past they have caused many problems. Does anyone know? sdcrdcf!alan

Women can hold two positions in Saudi Arabia, teaching and medical. The reason is that they need women teachers and doctors for women students and patients. For a woman to have a male doctor or instructor would be considered improper. I read up on this before a trip there a few years ago. In the NY Times Sunday Magazine (8/12/84?) there was an article by a woman NYT reporter who was stationed in Saudi Arabia. The article described her experiences in that area. She said (essentially) that she was treated pretty much like her male counterparts when she was acting as a reporter, but she was treated like a Saudi woman when on the street (she had to ride in a separate section on buses, etc.). She said that Saudis found it very strange when she said that she had no husband or family, so much so that she couldn't get her interviews done because of their curiosity about her single life, so she invented a husband and family for herself, and all the questioning stopped. So, is it possible that the Saudi University is looking for men AND women? Hard to say. I'd be surprised if they gave equal opportunity to Jews.
