COMMENT     Reprint kindly provided by A.Yoshida 10-SEP-1985.  50% of Orientals
            have only the ALDH1 isozyme, which in some cases produces an
            enzymatically inactive ALDH1 enzyme, and are missing the ALDH2
            isozyme (commonly designated 'atypical').  A very high incidence of
            acute alcohol intoxication in Orientals, as compared to Caucasians,
            can be directly attributed to genetic differences in the ALDH
            isozymes.  A poly-A signal is located at positions 1542-1547.
