[net.cse] Value of a degree, marking

jjboritz@watnot.UUCP (Jim Boritz) (03/10/86)

Here I go again.
First let's look at the kind of people that are going to universities these
days. Someone said that we saw the money in CS and therefore an increase
in CS majors. He also said that he would not hire somone that was in it for
money alone. Someone else said that most (not all) CS grads would become
computer scientists. I beg to differ. One of the big reasons for anyone to
get a CS degree, or any degree, is so that they can earn more money than the
guy that comes out of a trade school. Please note I am not lumping everyone
this category. I enjoy computer programming. I enjoy hacking. I enjoy other
things. But I will honestly admit that I came to university so that I
could go out and make lots of money. This is not the only reason that I
came. I also wanted to learn more about computers. What makes them tick
what they can and cannot do, computing theory etc etc. But I know alot of
people that see computers as the means to an end. A high paying job. They
are not fascinated by the things that can be done. They just want a job.
I am sorry if I seem to be stressing this a little too much, but this is
what I see.
