            The sequence of the period (per) gene, that is involved in the
            generation of biological rhythms, of D. melanogaster is determined.
            The sequence contains a remarkable run of alternating Gly-Thr
            residues. The length of the Gly-Thr region is similar to that of
            the mammalian Gly-Ser repeat in a chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan.
            The Gly-Thr repeat is both preceded by and followed by conspicuous
            Gly-Ser (or Ser-Gly) and Gly-Thr (or Thr-Gly) pairs. Futhermore,
            biochemical characterization of this antigen indicated that it is a
            proteoglycan.
