[net.cse] C.S. Programs

marco@andromeda.UUCP (the wharf rat) (10/18/86)

	Now, I don't have a degree (I got a job while I was working on
it and haven't gone back yet), and none of my code has ever been released,
just local stuff. But I've fixed *plenty* of stuff like :

	/* This routine parses bletch */
         <400 lines of code>
       /* end of routine */

So I've learned about comments. Chris Torek is _right_.

	But in spite of all I did learn at college, the thing I
learned the most from was this : Someone gave me a 3B2 and said,
here, learn about UNIX. It's this actual practical level that seems
so important and is so often missing in academic work. Not only did
I learn the kinds of things you just _don't_ learn from lectures
and books, but in my graduating class there were 500 people who
could program in C and one who knew what an inittab was. In my
opinion, any C.S. course should include real hands on experience,
not just writing programs for the sake of programming, or theory
without application.
