[net.followup] The Denver AT&T netnews saga

dyer@wivax.UUCP (Stephen Dyer) (11/25/83)

Yes, I really should have rephrased my comments on Denver and
netnews. I feel that it IS appropriate to notify people about
possibly undesirable policy within an institution, since other
people (potential employees) will want to take advantage of that
information in choosing whether to work there.

My point in objecting to it was threefold: first, internal matters
should not ordinarily be broadcast over the net, and I guess here
the point with Denver AT&T rests on whether one considers it an
"internal matter." I've come around to agree that it has larger
importance. Second, I still feel a bit uneasy seeing that broadcast
using the company's own facilities (but the irony was pretty enjoyable.)
Lastly, I only wanted to point out that such a broadcast by someone
within the organization will only antagonize management--that is,
the action isn't directly constructive, but rather is retaliative.
Thus, I think that this can only be recommended if the employees have
completely given up on more traditional tactics like private negotiation.
As it is, the posters are probably off looking for new jobs (and I can't
blame them!)
