[net.followup] DES:

outer@utcsrgv.UUCP (Richard Outerbridge) (12/01/83)

Last week I called the Toronto Star "Bureau of Accuracy" about the DES story.
They told me to call Canadian Press. CP said the story had been corrected
the next day (ie Nov. 15) with a furtherwire. I called the STAR back. They
checked their files and sent me a copy of the correction, which however
was NEVER RUN in the STAR. Here it is:

!!!! CORRECTION

KITCHENER, Ont. 765 (Night) para 3 (adds info on discovery) ... expert.

Three University of Waterloo professors have discovered the key to the
Public Key Distribution System which is often used in conjunction with the Data
Ebcryption [sic] Standard. The discovery has raised concerns that less well-
intentioned individuals might also be gaining access to vital computer
information.

	``AS FAR ... para 4

AND para 7 (adds description) ... system.

Dat [sic] Encryption Standard is a device that scrambles messages at
one end of a conversation between computers and unscrambles them at the other.
The Public Key Distribution System distributes passwords _ which allow access
to the computers _ between users.

THE PASSWORDS ... para 8_765 (Night)

= 30 =

As can be seen it still needs a few corrections, but at least its ALMOST
right. Of course the world at large will never know, but then you can't have
everything.
