The open reading frame shown in the features table could possibly extend further upstream to another Met codon; the exact COOH terminus of the mature PrP 27-30 product is not known, but the terminus indicated below is most consistent with the available amino acid compositional data [1]. PrP-related mRNA is expressed in both scrapie-infected and normal brain tissue, and in other normal tissues. There appears to be only one copy of this gene per haploid hamster genome.
