            The sequence of RNA segment 5 was determined from virion RNA by the
            primer extension method using dideoxynucleotides and reverse
            transcriptase, except for nucleotides 1-16 and 1564, which could
            not be determined by this method. By comparing the sequence with
            those of other influenza strains, it was indicated that there are
            separate classes of avian and human influenza A NP genes that can
            be distinguished on the basis of sites containing amino acids
            specific for avian and human influenza viruses and also by amino
            acid composition.
