The genomes of all nonsegmented negative-strand viruses contain a
large (L) gene capable of encoding polypeptides with Mrs greater
than 200000. L proteins are required for transcription and
replication of viral genomic RNA and they are found in catalytic
amounts (approximately 20 to 30 copies per sendai virion) in viral
nucleocapsids. In [1], the sequence of the L gene of sendai virus
was determined. It was the final Sendai virus gene to be sequenced.
Two additional overlapping reading frames which precede the L
protein sequence could encode proteins with Mrs of 6474 and 14026,
suggesting the gene is polycistronic.
