[comp.dcom.sys.cisco] Serial interfaces: Can you somehow poke 9600 async into a 48K V.32 port?

simon@ucs.Adelaide.EDU.AU (Simon Hackett) (05/07/90)

We want to connect two sites together, which in the long term will have
a highish-speed connection (48K or 2Mbit) between then, but which at
present have only got a couple of 9600 baud links running (Telecom
Australia can't do any better than 9600 baud to this site for at least a
year or so :-( )

We have a cisco in the central site with a spare 48K V32 serial port on
it, and we intend to buy a hybridge for the remote site.

My question is: what can be done about interfaces? I know I can't plug
the 9600 baud async straight into the 48K V.32 port on the central cisco
(wrong number of pins at least :-) ). But we do ultimately expect to be
using this sort of speed. I want to avoid buying any more new hardware
if I can get away with it, particularly if I'm going to throw it away in
12 months.

What do we need to do to connect 9600 baud links into the cisco box? do
we have to buy another serial interface of a different sort, then chuck
it out when the line is upgraded? What about the hybridge end?

I think the serial port on the cisco (a high-speed one) is capable of
running as slow as 9600. Is it possible to buy 9600 baud to V32
adaptors, or is this a stupid question?

Thanks,
	Simon Hackett
