I can't say exactly how many people have access to USENET, but I can make a rough estimate. Our site (GaTech) has mail routing info for over 2060 sites. That doesn't take into account all of the "hidden" sites which are reached through gateway machines, and it includes sites which get mail but not news. Taking that into account, assume, on the average, 5 people at each site get news. That means at least 10k people out there, and I expect that that is a very low figure. Perhaps 15 people per site, on the average, might be more accurate, in which case we have over 30k readers.
