We have just installed version 8.1 of cisco gateway software on our routers. A 'show route' command now shows me a the value of a 'hop-count' variable. I also noticed that I can retrieve this value using SNMP (variable ipRouteMetric4). It is interesting to see that even though the IGRP metric does NOT take the hop count into account, it was deemed more important to be able to retrieve the 'hop' count value rather than other 'non-retrievable' IGRP metric components like the 'reliability' of the path. I had sent out an earlier message regarding the same issue and had mentioned that the reliability value would be very useful for network operations and troubleshooting. Perhaps Cisco sees things differantly and feels that the 'hop' count is more valuable than the 'reliability' - but if so, could they share their viewpoints with this list so that we could benefit from the snmp retrievable value of 'hop-count' ? -vikas vikas@nisc.jvnc.net (609) 520-2000 JvNCnet, Princeton, NJ -----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think it's important to note that "ipRouteMetric" is one of the standard MIB variables, so any complete implementation of SNMP is obligated to support it. I also know from personal experience that not all implementations of SNMP management stations can deal with vendor-specific extensions to the MIB database. It would be interesting to know what cisco's plans are for additional variables, and I'll even take this opportunity to suggest that all the statistics kept in the box should be available via SNMP. However, I can't fault them for providing complete SNMP support before they also include a complete set of cisco-specific extensions to it. Dana J.
