[comp.dcom.sys.cisco] Network Analyzers

ron@ctios2.ctio.noao.edu (ron lambert x238) (07/24/90)

We have a Cisco AGS with ethernet and T1 interfaces. The T1 interfaces
via V35 to a braodband modem and then onto a uwave link. We are looking for
an analyzer that has the option to be able to monitor/troubleshoot on
both sides of the Cisco, i.e. ethernet and T1. Is there anyone who knows
of such a machine and approx price.
		Many thanks ron lambert

Generally, an ethernet LAN anaylzer and a protocol analyzer for serial lines
are different boxes. I haven't seen any combined boxes, at least not any which
did either job real well. I recommend you spend a lot of money on a good
LAN analyzer, and spend as little as you can for a serial line protocol
analyzer.

You will use the LAN analyzer all the time, and sometimes for hard problems.
On the other hand, you probably won't use the protocol analyzer nearly as much.
Furthermore, you probably won't rely upon the protocol analyzer as often. I
don't have a cisco manual in front of me, but there may be enough traces
in the cisco to obviate the need for a high-power protocol analyzer. I do,
however, like to see what is happening on the line, at least to the extent
of seeing flags and perhaps watching the cisco's try to bring the line up.

No such beast at present, but with the advent of PPP such
a device makes a lot of sense. It is just another hardware interface
for software that is already writ. May need some "node simulation"
capability that is not required to eavesdrop on Enet, in order to
tickle the other end of the circuit. Otherwise, piece of cake. :-)

	Novell, Network General, you listening?

Tektronix (my employer) has a subsidiary LPCOM, which I believe makes a
product which may fill your need. Hope this helps:

LPCOM 415-967-5400 205 Ravendale Dr., Mountainview, Ca. 94043

Also, I found this name (sales) : Vern Sarkin 415-335-2868 .

The model I saw split the screen between Lanalyzer & serial-line capture.

I've used my Lanalyzer for years, but usually watch others do serial-line
diagnosis (not my turf, you know, old chap). The LPCOM looked like it was
good for that too. Let me know what you think.

We don't have any equipment which can do both sides of the router, but we
do use the following:
  - Sniffer for protocol analysis
  - LANalyzer for LAN analysis
Note: IMHO, there _is_ a significant difference between the two
(see the June 26th issue of PC Magazine for more info)
  - Telenex T1 datascope: this has probably the most user hostile MMI
I've ever seen, but since Telenex bought Atlantic Research who makes
datascopes for up to channelized T1, and who have a very good MMI, one
can only hope that the ARC MMI will prevail (god forbid that the Telenex
    MMI prevails).

Hope this helps (I'm at home, so I don't have addresses or phone #s handy).

Ron,
In regards to your query:

We've recently purchased the Network General Network Analyzer. It doesn't
have the T1 analyzer on it yet, but they expect to have one available very
soon. We looked at other smaller chassis but decided to go with this one
because it (a Compaq 386), has the expansion slots that will allow the V.35
interface to be attached. Then, we just need the right software....

Contact Network General for more info. We really like the product. We
looked at others, but really like this one the most overall. We bought
ours from Jordan Electronics in Anaheim, CA at (714) 939-9188.
The Network General main office is in Menlo Park, CA (415) 688-2700.

Wandel & Golterman have a new analyzer out (about now?) which will do
Ethernet, Token Ring (+more) and I believe it will soon do T1 (+more).

It is the DA-30. I'm not sure if it has been released as yet because
altough we have a glossy brochure we haven't got all of its specs.

Cheers,
mdh
