What we would need is a TELNET/LAT translator integrated in a router
so that one could run LAT over any part of the Internet, ie.
LAT-TELNET in the source router and TELNET-LAT at the destination.
This would solve the problem of running LAT over long distance when
bridging is for some reason or other out of question.

You can certainly do this sort of protocol translation. Currently
it requires two boxes (a router and a CPT). The CPT can convert
LAT->TCP and TCP->LAT on it's ethernet interface, and the TCP can
be routed over an arbitary IP network. Similar conversion to/from
X.25 is possible, but you need to add an X.25 interface to the router,
and have it switch calls to/from the CPT.
