[comp.dcom.sys.cisco] Problems with TRouter....

sblair@synoptics.com (Steven Blair) (11/05/90)

Greetings, over the weekend, SYNOPTICS.COM has relocated to our new
buildings in Santa Clara(from Mt. View). When we brought up our
TRouter(s/n TR1289B723B(model TR12-2E16-MC)(OS=8.1)). strange behavior
started almost immediately.

Our TRouter sits between BARRnet(internet), and our internal network
to isolate/filter us from the Internet. Almost immediately after
bringing it onto the network. we started noticing duplicate IP
complaints from any Sun, Mac(running Mac TCP), PC/NFS machines, and/or
any PC's running FTP's software.

Upon further examination, we discovered that the cisco was "attaching"
itself to any systems' MAC address, IE:

xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx MAC=8:0:20:8:b2:58(DNA SOA -- synoptics.com)**correct**

or any other IP host would first look "OK", then take on the MAC
address of the TRouter. IE:

trouter ip = xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (enet -1-)
             xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (enet -0-)
        MAC = 0:0:c:0:2b:5c

Now what's the problem?? Since we have over 60++ UNIX hosts, and almost
400++ IP hosts, this is not neat to deal with on a network that's over
6 miles wide.

Basically, all *IP* hosts are seen in the TRouter's and UNIXs' arp
cache tables as having differing IP addresses, but the *SAME* MAC
address(0:0:c:0:2b:5c).

This is wreaking havoc on the SYNOPTICS.COM network. As a result, we've
had to remove your unit, as we can't live with this type of behavior on
our internal networks.

It appears that there's something wrong with the TRouter. We need to
get it fixed. Please contact me via email as I don't know my new phone
number yet, so we can arrange to get this unit repaired, and ASAP.

I've also verified that there is no loops in the network, and another
Sun with 2 enet interfaces(anon ftp machine) does not have this problem..

Regards
