FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CISCO INTERNETWORK ROUTERS ADD 'TRANSITION GATEWAY' FEATURE ALLOWING COMMUNICATION BETWEEN DECNET PHASE IV, PHASE V HOSTS MENLO PARK, Calif., Nov. 6, 1990 -- The ability to communicate between comput ers supporting Digital Equipment Corporation's DECnet Phase IV protocol and those supporting DECnet Phase V has been added to cisco Systems' family of internetwork router/bridges. This "transition gateway" capability will be a standard feature of cisco routers shipped beginning this month. It is the second step in a three-part program which began in May 1990 with the ability to allow communication between DECnet Phase V host computers using the ES-IS and IGRP IS-IS protocols. The program will be completed by mid-1991 when the OSI IS-IS dynamic routing protocol becomes a defined industry standard and is implemented in the cisco routers. To permit communication between DECnet Phase IV and Phase V devices, the transition gateway feature disseminates routing information with both the Phase IV and IGRP IS-IS routing protocols. In addition, packets from either protocol may be translated to the packet format of the other protocol when necessary. ======== boilerplate deleted ================ The Phase IV-Phase V transition gateway is a standard feature included at no extra cost with cisco router/bridges shipping this month. It is available as a software upgrade for previously installed units.
