There seem to have been a variety of forces at work here. In summary:

1. A problem which had been introduced into the Multigate code while
correcting something else has been found and eliminated.

2. cicso suggested setting 'NO APPLETALK CHECKSUM'. A separate piece of
mail suggested that QuickMail did not issue EtherTalk packets with
checksums (note that I have not confirmed this).

3. Our QuickMail Manager came up with a whole lot of timeout and retry
parameters that it is suggested may have to be increased in an
   Internetworked environment.

It would seem that all these factors have accounted for the variety of
problems we were having and which now appear to be gone. Thanks to all
people who posted on this topic.
