[comp.dcom.sys.cisco] Questions on IP-Accounting

satz@cisco.com (Greg Satz) (02/02/91)

There are a collection of tools on ftp.cisco.com that capture IP accounting
information. See the file README for details.

Note that ftp.cisco.com is changing IP addresses this weekend so it may not
be accessible for a while. Just try again later.

Does anyone know of an application for retrieving and evaluating the
Cisco IP-accounting data?

We would like to use a VMS system for this purpose with the Wollongong
software; a SUN will be however also available in the near future.

We are currently aware of the following programs:
   gwacc.c (which uses SNMP) and
   account.shar (for Unix systems)

As was pointed out a few months ago, the accounting data in its present form
is extremely difficult to manage.
However, Jim Forster pointed out in an earlier article:
> We also knew that 30,000 raw accounting entries is useless unless

> application comes in -- it can massage the data into per-subnet, or any
> other arbitrary billing grouping desired.

> Unfortunately, no one has done the type of application that we envisioned.

Has something happened in this direction in the mean time?
It would be nice if for example SUN could offer accounting software on
the basis of its SNMP/SYBASE application.

Will release 8.2 offer some more comfort with respect to accounting?
When is going to be available, particularly in Europe?

Thanks for answering some or all of my questions,
