[comp.dcom.sys.cisco] gateway system hung

Today we had a problem with our Cisco router.  Running 8.1(19) on a gateway
system, we have the router configured with one ethernet and one serial turned
on.  The router was not allowing any traffic and would not respond to telnet or
ping, and any users needing to go through the router were blocked.  Turning the
router off and on resolved the problem immediately.

Where should I look for the cause of the problem and what can I do to prevent
its recurrance?
