[comp.dcom.sys.cisco] DECnet performance vs. route cache

steve@calvin.vf.ge.com (Steve Cunningham) (06/05/91)

Problem : using AGS+ linked to IGS via 112 Kbps serial line
file transfer performance using decnet or ndm (on top of decnet)
was awful, terrible slow until we turned route cache off.

After suffering some debugging time where the sympotom was sloooow
performance we turned off route cache. Performance went way up
such that transfer rates were very close to all that 112 has to offer.

The cisco manualk suggests that route cache should be off for "slow
speed lines" though slow is not defined. We think that performance is toilet
unless this route cache is turned off. Other experiences ????

Also, what is slow and of course what is fast ? is anything less than T1
consdiered slow ??

First thought this was a "bug" but now think that manual is poorly worded
and that route cache should be off for decnet on any fractional sppeed line.

As we roll out more routers on diff speed lines we would like to know more.
