[comp.specification] Anyone know what PDES/STEP stands for?

dan@s3sol.scubed (Dan Peterka) (03/13/91)

I need some quick turn around help on what is meant by the acronym
PDES/STEP. I think the PDES stands for something like Product
Definition Exchange Standard, but know little more than that
admittedly weak reference.

Thanks for any help...

STEP is a software testing methodology. The details of the acronym escape
me at the moment. The second (and latest) edition of Bill Hetzel's book
"The Complete Guide to Software Testing" uses STEP as an example testing
methodology and looks at it in some detail. Important upshot: STEP is a
proven methodology that works in practice. Anyway, that's is chapter 3 of
the book. I'm sure more STEP references are given at the end of the
chapter.

Uhh, I think you have the wrong STEP. PDES stands for Product
Definition Exchange Specification, which started as a US effort.
STEP stands for Standard for Exchange of Product Model Data (I
believe) which is the European version of same. PDES/STEP indicates
that both groups are trying to converge on a single standard for
product modeling data.

From the IPO (IGES/PDES Organization) Reference Manual

"Recently the definition for PDES was revised to Product Data Exchange
using STEP (Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data) to underscore
that PDES is the American activity which supports the development of the
international standard, STEP."

It used to be Product Data Exchange Specification.

MEGABYTES of docs and software on this can be found in the pdes and step
directories via ftp @ durer.cme.nist.gov.

The cals directory there is also relevant. Try a message saying "send help"
and "send index" to nptserver@cme.nist.gov or ftp the readme files etc.
