[llnl.x] Solution to display UNIX X client on VMS server

chapman@lll-crg.llnl.gov (Carol Chapman) (09/27/90)

Thank you to everyone who sent me suggestions on how to run an X
client on a UNIX VAX and display it on a VMS VAXstation 3100. For
others wishing to try this, here's what is necessary if you're using
the DECwindows session manager and VMS 5.3 with TCP/IP:

1. On the VMS end of things: your workstation must have a file
called sys$sysroot:[sysmgr]decw$private_server_setup.com. If the file
is not there (mine wasn't), make a copy of another file in that same
directory called decw$private_server_setup.template and modify it.
Within the file, your workstation node must be listed and tcpip must
be listed as a method of transport. After getting this file all set
up, you must have your system administrator stop and then restart
DECwindows. It is not enough to just log out and then back on.

2. On the VMS end: In the Security submenu of the Customize menu of
the session manager, set Node = full name of UNIX computer (e.g.
lll-crg.llnl.gov, not just crg); set username = * (I couldn't get this
to work using my account name here); set transport = tcpip (no '/').

3. On the UNIX end: For a program (client) named foo that is to be
displayed on workstation my_vax type: foo -display my_vax:0.0

That should do it!
