[net.space] SETI and Binary Stars?

fred (11/11/82)

I have heard it stated, in this net, that binary
and multiple star systems should be excluded from SETI searches.
The reasoning is that only eccentric or non-stable orbits
are likely to exist in these systems.

I would like to hear from someone who really understands
these things if indeed that statement is true or a bunch of smoke.
After all Jupiter would not need to be too much more massive for it to
light its nuclear reaction and I doubt that if it were a small star
that it would have stopped mankind from crawling out of the mud.
