[comp.sys.alliant] Ethernet io

Jay Liang and Thomas Pierrehumbert ask:

>>How come so little traffic on this newsgroup? Does that mean
>>nobody has any problems with their machines?
>I was wondering the same thing, too.

Ok, here we go:

The following is for an FX/80 with 8CE and 3 VMEbus IP.

I recently compared Ethernet io speed between different machines at
our Institute with the following method:

  dd if=/dev/full ibs=4k obs=4k count=256|rsh other time dd of=/dev/null

This took some 5 seconds from SUN to SUN and from SUN to IBM Risc
(reading from /dev/zero), but 21 to 25 seconds between SUNs and
Alliant (both directions, same ether branch).

Alliant simply said that they knew the Xylogics controller to be
slow and that with Concentrix 5.7 there would be a new and faster
controller, which doesn't help much at moment.

What's your experience with ethernet IO? How does it depend on IP
load?

Patrik
