[comp.sys.apple2] NuLib vs NuPak

fadden@cory.Berkeley.EDU (Andy McFadden) (03/22/90)

After a week, I've finally accomplished two things: (1) saw NuPak for
myself, and (2) got a response from Mr. Thompson.

According to Mr. Thompson, no part of NuPak uses NuLib code. After reviewing
NuPak v2.0, I find no reason to disbelive him. The code is too small,
and the changes to NuLib would have to be fairly extensive to achieve the
user interface. Also, the placement of text in the code itself suggests
a major re-write at the very least.

All of which means that I have no problem with NuPak; go ahead and distribute
it, and pay the shareware fee if you're too impatient to wait for GS/ShrinkIt.

However, there are a few interesting items...
- Apparently Mr. Thompson mis-read the NuFX document exactly the same way
I did. Either he's using my misguided algorithms, or Andy N. needs to
  re-write the NuFX doc (again :-) ).
- He also used a similar method of handling filenames, since
NuPak crashes on ShrinkIt v3.0 archives (NuLib gives a bus error or
  segmentation fault under UNIX).

At any rate, I'll post an updated version Real Soon Now.
