On Thu, 12 Apr 90 03:17 EST you said: >In the April column, you mentioned something about cards allowing VGA monitors >to be used on the Apple IIgs. Does this mean one can get VGA quality graphics >out of a PC transporter with one of these cards? I do NOT believe so because the transporter only supports EGA (EGA display will work ok on VGA monitors -- I've seen that on hardware around here). > Also, it's said that the AE TransWarp GS will not work on a ROM 03 IIgs. >Might be something you can use....also, any word on a release date for GS >System 6.0, or the ROM 04 GS? I had not heard that the TranWarp and ROM 03 were (are?) in conflict. I'd anticipate that AE can solve that problem with a firmware update if it's true. System 6.0 is taking on a property of Microsoft Windows (earlier versions as well as the present instance) - you take today's date (any today will do) and add 30 to get the (current) forecast release date for 6.0. I did ask a beta tester about 6.0's delay, and all he had to say was * * * * * B U G S ! ! ! ! * * * * (but when it's working it's really NEAT) I'm not sure even Apple knows when they plan to release ROM 04. I have been told that they DO plan to intro it *someday* (it offers significant advantages but is not so radically new as to upset *most* of the Mac strategy. It may be that Apple will have to figure out that they really can't make a "low end" Mac cheaply enough. Technically, the ROM 04 should be in marketable shape by August. It *could* be announced anytime after that, but don't hold your breath (would you believe next Spring?). It's going to be interesting to see what Windows 3.0 for the 80386 World does to the price of Macs. Windows 3.0 will bring virtually all of the user friendly features of the Mac (even some of the System 7.0 things) to PC's with 80386SX or higher (on or about the 3.0 release date a number of ports of Macware will be announced for Windows 3.0) -- price competition for the Macintosh at last! On the other hand, I'm told that PC Soft (runs MS DOS on the Mac) IS (already) compatible with Windows 3.0 IN 386 MODE! It is alleged that on a IIci or IIfx Windows 3.0 under PC Soft is as faster (or faster) than on a 16 or 20 MHz Model 70 :-) I guess that means we can "PS 2-IT" on a Macintosh :-))) /s Murph <Sewall%UConnVM.BITNET@CUNYVM.CUNY.Edu> I bought the latest computer; it came fully loaded. It was guaranteed for 90 days, but in 30 was outmoded! - The Wall Street Journal passed along by Big Red Computer's SCARLETT
