[comp.sys.apple2] Mockingboard

clobot@caen.engin.umich.edu (Steven Leslie Roth) (04/11/90)

Hello All! Sorry the References line is wrong; the Postnews program
on this computer will not accept VT100 emulation, so I am resorting
to using the followup article option (and changin the subject field).

So here goes!
Does anyone out there (netland) have or use a Mockingboard? Please
e-mail me if you do! I have a Mockingboard C (sound/speech). I can only
get speech out of 1 speaker. Since there are 2 sets of chips for everything
except speech, and there are sockets for the other speech chip, I was
wondering if putting in another speech chip would let me use speech in the
other speaker? How would I use the second chip? Where might I get it?

The chip is labelled:
            SSI 263 AP
            N8519

Thanks!
Steve (clobot@caen.engin.umich.edu)

CEO summary:
I was in the same boat since I bought 2 voice chips very cheaply
via the local users group. I was very surprised to find that the SW
that SMS provides will ONLY ALLOW 1 VOICE AT A TIME. I called about
this and they said that I could modify the SW if I wanted and sent me
a very very blurry Xerox of some sample code to use (Ive lost it
since then). I tried a bit but gave up eventually since I was in
college and working on graduating.
If anyone does have some drivers/programs that can use both voice
chips, Id be very interested to hear from them.

Sorry - I'd prefer to mail but it doesn't work.
I happened to get a wiring-diagram of the dual-sound-version some years
ago and succeeded making the card work.
here there are
2 6522 which interface to the apple-slot
2 AY-8912 (or 8910?) which do the sound (same as the one in the Ataris)
1 7405 to do some switching between the 6522s.

I'm a bit astonished as I always thought, SweetMicro had used a Votrax-
SC-01 to produce speech...
Sorry - I've no docs about the speech-version.

Can I help in some other way?

I have and use a Mockingboard C board. You do need to get the other chip if you want dual voices, but (obviously) you can use both speakers for the music. Contact me if you want to buy the other chip.... Also, I do have the docs for both the speech and sound parts. I'd be willing to part with them. Everything is fully programmable...
