[comp.sys.apple2] TGE GIF timings

johnmac@fawlty.towers.oz (John MacLean) (06/13/90)

Some people have requested timings for GIF loads/saves through TGE,
so here goes:

Load eleven SHR 320x200 single palette pictures into GIF module from 3.5":
Total: ~ 3 minutes.
Average:	< 17 seconds.
Save eleven images as GIF images to /RAM5:
Total: ~ 2 minutes 20 seconds.
Average:	< 13 seconds.
Save eleven images as GIF images to my slug of a CMS hard disk:
Total: ~ 3 minutes.
Average:	< 17 seconds.
Load eleven GIF images (320 x 200 x 16 colors) from 3.5":
Total: ~ 3 minutes 20 seconds.
Average:	~ 18 seconds.
Load eleven GIF images (320 x 200 x 256 colors) from 3.5":
Total: ~ 4 minutes 15 seconds.
Average:	~ 23 seconds.

BTW, there were 11 SHR pics in the first directory I chose, so I kept
this number for the rest of my tests.

I also tested a GIF save under SHRconvert for comparison, but I gave up after
several minutes (it was not even half way there).

The GIF modules are not available in TGE version 4.X, but will follow shortly
in the first library disk (things are looking good).
Final testing and tidying up is going on now.
The library disk will contain 17 new modules, and a CDA that lets you save
any screen (from lo-res to super-hi-res to 40 and 80 column text screens)
to a file.
