[comp.sys.apple2] Converting Macintosh Sounds to GS

delaneyg@wnre.aecl.ca (Grant Delaney) (06/27/90)

I seem to remeber thins comming up before but can anyone tell be which
bite values need to be changed in Macintosh sound files and to what to make
them compatable with the GS. I down loaded some great BEEPs but the noise
just doesn't come out right.

Thanks

You can probably just change all the zeroes into ones. (But if your sound
is compressed somehow, you'll have to figure out how to uncompress it
first.)

Well, don't take my word for it, but I recall something about changing
all the $00's to $80's for Mac->GS and vice-versa for GS->Mac.  Don't
forget that the speed of the sound could be different from what was on
the Mac. I have abosulutely NO clue about how to modify that tho. I
vaguely recall it having to do with the auxilary filetype number.

Grant,

Someone wrote that if you edit the file and change all of the 80 to 00
(I believe that was the right way), then it would work fine. I have done it.
I have a sound from Ghostbusters saying "Ray, this looks extraordinarly bad"
that could barely be made out. I used the program "TEXTC" to convert all 80
to 00 bytes and it came out fine. Try it.

If you need any help with the conversion, just drop me a line and I'll try
to remember how I did it. I also have the conversion chart to match the Mac
sounds with the GS. I'm doing that to make the sounds more universal. I had
a good Batman sound that was done with the GS, but when I transferred it to the
Mac, the sound was too slow at one speed and too fast at the other speed.

Later for now,

Which files to I use on the Mac to convert? The generic "document" file, or
the special "Sound Mover document" file? I can convert to the SM file, but
not vice versa. Is there an application out there that can convert from
Sound->snd as well as snd->Sound? I have one direction, but I'm not too
familiar with the Mac yet.
